Video: Apples Green MacBook TV advert

Well we’ve seen Apple’s new MacBooks, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air in shining images splashed all over the net on their arrival, and well it was only a matter of time before Apple hit the airwaves of TV with a promotional campaign. And thus Apple has producted and debuted a new Apple Mac TV advert which has begun showing on US network television. In said advert, Apple explains that their new range of MacBooks advanced alimunium and glass casings are utterly recyclable and that they are enginerred to be so efficient that it only uses a quarter of the power used in a single light bulb.Anyway, I’ll let you watch the video below and you can judge for yourselves.

HP Mini 1000: how to get 3G working

When the HP Mini1000 came out last month there was whispers of a fell 3G spec version following in December, well it’s not quite December and an owner has managed to get online with his new HP mini 1000.Dplky user over at Pocketables forum has put in some time with AT&T and HP customer support so he can describe the how-to which the full instructions can be found at the source.Basically you will need to download a WWAN drive from HP, extract and install it then slot your SIM into the battery compartment, but with a 3-cell battery it will struggle to keep broadcasting, and is unlikely to work with older HP mini 1000s.

Video: Apple slates Vista and advertising costs

We all know that when it comes to advertising a product it’s going to run expensive, and several people, including Apple had something to say about Microsoft forking over $300 million to shout out the goodness of Vista in their advertising campaign. But the reality is Apple spends far more on getting the big wide world to know about their products and services, however, unlike Microsoft, Apple campaigns actually work.According to figures, Apple’s advertising budget for the fiscal year ending 2008 was a staggering $486 million, the year before it was $467 million, and before that in 06 it was $338 million, so it looks like advertising is becoming more expensive. So maybe Apple shouldn’t be saying anything against just how much Microsoft pays when they are no more frugal.

256GB SSD mass produced by Samsung on their way

The problem with SSDs is that they are simply too expensive with low capacities, for instance a current 128GB SSD costs about $400.00 which is way more expensive that the normal mechanical dive and holds less data. However, Samsung are preparing to breach the gap with their new 256GB SSD that they have just placed in mass production. Its storage is close-ish to being on par with most laptop hard drives, and as a mass production product Samsung should be able to keep the pricing down.An Axiom 256GB SSD goes for as much as $7,500 and no word on Samsung’s prices yet, but when you consider Samsung’s 128GB SSDs go for between $550 and $800 their 256GB SSD could well come in between $1,000 and $1,400, which still isn’t cheap, but is way below the Axiom

Intel foresees UMPCs that consume 20 times less power by 2009

Intel lately released a video on how the future UMPCs might look like or it could be just a hallucination. Intel has now predicted that in the midst of the year 2009, we will be seeing the ultra-mobile devices that will consume 20 times less power than those available in 2006. Their upcoming Moorestown platform is scheduled to be launched in 2009. Moorestown will let the devi9ces to run for full 24 hours before going for a recharge. They will accomplish the task by integrating CPU, GPU and memory controller functions into one chip. Anyhow, it hasn’t been revealed whether the Moorestown will sport DX10 graphics and next-gen WiMAX technologies or not.

THE LATEST UPCOMING LAPTOP THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

The best thing about technology is that it improves and develops continuously. This probably is also the most challenging bit about technology that a buyer finds difficult to deal with. The laptop that is right for you will depend solely on your need. The most important question for you to answer is: why do I need a laptop? The latest laptops are full of features enhancing connectivity, usability, communication and also your comfort. They are lighter, faster and sport trendy looks. Following are some of the outstanding features of the latest upcoming laptops. You will also understand which feature provides you what kind of service and whether you need that or not.RAM: RAM or random access memory determines the amount of bits a programme can use while it runs on your laptop. The more programmes that you need to work on, the higher should be the RAM of your laptop. If you are a multimedia developer, a gamer or an architect, you would need a laptop with higher RAM so that you can run a number of programmes simultaneously without affecting the speed adversely. The latest upcoming laptops have installed RAM from 1GB to 4GB (Sony VAIO SZ). You can also upgrade RAM. So it is best that you choose a laptop where extra memory can be added.Hard Drive: Hard Disc Drive (HDD) or hard drive as it is most commonly known as stores digitally encoded data in your laptop. Simply speaking it is the HDD that stores the newly created data and the old data even after the power supply is turned off. So if you want to play games and store your progress, keep latest flicks and music in your laptop, share it with someone else, keep a backup of your work, you will need a laptop with bigger HDD.These days laptops come with even 200GB hard disk. That’s a huge storage area. Remember though, a bigger hard drive also means heavier weight.Processor: Processor is simply put the brain of your laptop. It processes all the instruction that you enter on your laptop, starting from typing a word document to playing a game. Most manufacturers use either Intel processors or AMD processors. Intel Processors has a slower internal clock rate than AMD Processors. If you want high end graphics quality then AMD processor is your pick. But remember to check if your laptop has the latest version of the processor. The latest set of processors is Intel Core 2 Duo from Intel and AMD Opteron and Athlon Dual Core from AMD.Connectivity: Connectivity is the need of the hour. You want to keep your laptop as mobile as possible. Look for a Bluetooth and wireless enabled laptop if you want to stay connected wherever you go. Again the latest upcoming laptops come with a bouquet of wireless connectivity options. Also to consider is the number of USB ports in your laptop so that you can use the telephone, broadband or Ethernet connections as well as connect your laptop with other compatible devices like printer, camera, mobile phone etc.Once you decide on the main features, you can also accessorise your laptop according to your need.

Redfly C7 and C8n ships Early December from $229

The Celio Redfly C7 is a knocked down version of the original REDFLY, a folio style Windows Mobile that was originally an 8.3 inch display and is now chopped down to a 7 inch display with losing 3 hours of its battery life, so the Redfly C7 swaps endurance and screen size for a lower weight of a couple of ounces.Equally you could opt for the Celio Redfly C8N which sports an 8.3 inch display and “REDFLY Media Port” which connects to an Apple iPhone, iPos, Zune, digicam or virtually anything else that incorporates a TV-out.One catch though is you will require a $20.00 “REDFLY Media Cable” on top of the cost of the C8N package. Both the Celio Redfly C7 and Celio Redfly C8N should hit the first week of December with the Redfly C7 costing $229.00 and the Redfly C8N costing $299.00.

The Future of Laptops: Apple, Dell and Samsung etc, what next?

There have been several new releases of laptops over the past few months from big name such as Apple, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Asus, HP, Lenovo and Acer amongst others. I myself use a Dell Dimension Desktop, and as a writer I know several people on the internet in varying countries across the globe and occasionally ask what machine they prefer. The difference is wide ranging mostly when speaking to those in America the mention of the Apple Mac for instance send them into a tirade of moans, but this is when experiencing the older MacBooks, as yet I haven’t found any writer who uses one of the new MacBooks or MacBook Pros. Other say they wouldn’t trade their Toshiba for anything else, I also know a couple who are experiencing drastic problems with their HP machines which seem to crash every 30 minutes. It’s difficult to say which laptop manufacturer comes out on top as everyone has his or hers preference in manufacturer. One thing is for sure though, laptop manufacturers have to keep ahead of the game and product better and faster machines with easier and more powerful applications to suit the computing world of today. So what do our readers think the laptop market will be like in say 10 years time? Who do you think will dominate in the laptop world? What do you think we can expect to see with new laptops in the future?James.

Dell vs HP: What laptop makers do you prefer?

Two big names associated with the world of computing are Dell and HP, both leaders in the laptop and desktop provider arena, but which company would win your vote in a battle between these two giants?Dell, supplier of the likes of the Dimension, Inspiron, XPS, Studio series laptops, and gives the ability for the potential customer to “build” their own laptop to their required specifications, as long as it’s a Dell component that is. The only thing I would say Dell has really against it is that you can’t simply walk into a retail store on purchase a Dell machine, well not here in the UK anyway.HP, supplier of HP Pavilion range of laptops, the Compaq Presario laptops, the TouchSmart, Media Centre Elite, and the HDX, again a wide range supplier of today’s laptops to the public. With HP you can go into a retail store and purchase, but can you customise to suit your needs like you can with Dell?I’d like to see who could come out on top between these two or even if you prefer another supplier. So I’d like to ask out readers what laptop maker do you prefer?James.

Rugged new P470 laptop from Getac

Rugged laptop manufacturer has just announced a new model, the P470 -- a 'secure and rugged' laptop designed to keep valuable data secure on the move.
Despite a lightweight magnesiumn alloy case, the P470 still weighs a whopping 3kg , but at least it has a built-in carrying handle. The hard disk and screen are shock-mounted, and all the ports have caps to protect against dust and water

Getac V100 Tablet

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t do with a brand new laptop, it’s take it down to the beach, roll it around in the sand and drop it into a rocky pool. While such a day trip would spell the end for most laptops, some, like the Getac V100 Tablet, are made of sturdier stuff

Getac P470 rugged laptop

Most manufacturers would no doubt describe their laptops as “built to last”, but there aren’t that many who go the extra mile to make their models robust enough to withstand more than just the odd knock they’ll get on the daily commute. Getac is one manufacturer that does, however, and its new P470 rugged laptop is built to shrug off all manner of harsh treatment.

It's not much use having an indestructible laptop capabale of resisting soaring temperatures if you can't see the screen for the blazing sun. Good job, then, that Getac has fitted out its tank-like V100 tablet with an optional new Sunlight-Readable LCD display.
The screen boasts a brightness of 1200cd/msq – which Getac claims is the highest in the industry. And before you ask, the LED backlit display doesn't place any more strain in the battery.
In addition to its powers of brightness the new screen uses an, "active anti-reflective process," to block any reflected light, thus boosting visibility even further. Now, if only we had any bright sunlight to test it with.

Asus has been basking smugly in the glare of the positive mass media attention it’s getting for the great Eee laptop but, dammit, Dell has had enough. In fact, it wants some of that mini-laptop spotlight itself and thinks its Mini-Inspiron will do the trick.
Dell posted these photos on its blog after Michael Dell was spotted by Gizmodo US carrying one around and the rumour-mill cranked up.

Sony may have been a step slow in catching up to Apple in the portable MP3 player market, but it's been out in front when it comes to turning the laptop from a boring gray slab of plastic into a chic travel accessory. It's been offering its VAIO laptops with different color cases for a while now, with the just-announced VAIO CR line being the latest set of rainbow-hue portables. At 5.5 pounds, the new notebook isn't as ultraportable as some of Sony's offerings, but it's definitely lighter than a typical laptop. Available in five different color choices—blue, pink, red, white, and black—the VGN-CR120E's pricing starts at $1,369.99. Classified as an Intel Centrino Duo (or "Santa Rosa") laptop, the VGN-CR120E features a new 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo T7100 processor, Intel's new X3100 integrated graphics, and 802.11n wireless networking support. The base config has 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a double-layer DVD burner, and Windows Vista Home Premium. To keep the size down, Sony has given the system a smallish 14.1-inch LCD. Fashionistas will appreciate the optional color-coordinated laptop case and external mouse. Sony says the VAIO CR series will be available at the end of June.

Just don’t get too excited, because this is old news [circa 2004]. And something that is currently being rehashed as new on Digg, Slashdot, and Linux sites…
I’m sure you have seen it too: the news along the lines of “[insert random OEM here] releasing incredible Linux offers”, quickly followed by naive comments proclaiming the end of Microsoft.
The fact is, OEMs and companies like Wal-Mart have been attempting to sell Linux based PCs and Laptops/Notebooks for years. Take a look:
Sept. 14, 1999 Is the IBM Thinkpad now Linux-friendly?
Spring 2000 Dell Delivers Linux! [Archive.org]
June 17, 2002 Wal-Mart trims prices of Linux-based PCs
May 12, 2003 HP “people’s notebook” runs Linux
July 22, 2004 Toshiba Windows media laptop plays with embedded Linux
Unfortunately, most of these attempts have resulted in complete failure or extremely small volume [Wal-Mart couldn't even sell 1000 of those Laptops]. And every few years, the waters are tested again, with the same exact outcome.
Lets face the truth: Linux does not work for the average consumer, it never has, as “choice” is not something that consumers are looking for. Familiarity, function, and eye candy are the determining factors here.
As “Linux” is not synonymous with “Wal-Mart”; it neither is with “Desktop.”

I guess I would say I don't "mod" systems so much as completely rebuild them. This is a perfect example as everything in the Xbox 360 has been taken apart and reassembled, with LCD screen, in laptop form inside a custom case. Here are the specs:1) Uses a 17" wide (diagonal) 1280x720 progressive-scan LCD VGA monitor (for HD-level resolutions) Thus you can actually read the text in Dead Rising.2) Water-cooled with custom-built radiator. Allows for a slimmer main body versus the mammoth heat sinks in a stock 360.3) Built-in keyboard and Wi-Fi.4) USB hub allows original number of 3 USB ports for user.5) All-aluminum case, except for plastic keyboard / ring of light / screen control area.6) Uses single customized "expanded" power supply brick for both screen and Xbox 360.7) Breakout ports on back allow hookup to component TV, VGA monitor, sound system (analog or TOSlink) and even crummy composite video.8) Size: 16.75" x 10.75" x 2.8" Weight: 14 pounds (with water loaded)

This is a review for the new 14.1 widescreen ThinkPad Z61t with titanium cover. The Z61t is the update to the newer widescreen Z series of ThinkPads. It sports Intel's Core Duo processor. The Z series is the more multimedia oriented notebook in the ThinkPad line with a widescreen display, built-in web cam, media card reader, FireWire connector and more. It combines the convenience and mobility of a notebook with the performance and functionality of a desktop.Reason for BuyingI used to have a Dell Inspiron 1100, bought 3 years ago just because I thought it was a good deal. It used a 2 GHz Celeron processor. I soon realized what a mistake it was. I used to curse it every other day. It was nothing but a brick and after 1 year of it would mysteriously shutdown after using it for more than 2 hours. It was producing enough heat to keep my house warm in winter. I ditched it after just 1 years of use. I was somehow managing with my office supplied Pentium III 900 MHz desktop. Then along came my daughter, who is 4 months old now. My wife started complaining that I was spending too much time at the home-office with my desktop, not spending enough time with my daughter. She couldn't find time to use the desktop as well, as the baby needed constant attention. So I decided I needed to get a laptop so that I could watch TV, watch my daughter and browse all at the same time. I also wanted something light so that I can easily carry it around the house with one hand. Another requirement was to have all the data to be in one secure place. I have an external USB hard disk /printer/ DVD burner, LCD monitor etc. Also I make it a point to backup my computer frequently with the external hard disk. I couldn't afford to connect all these accessories and disconnect them one by one when I needed to carry the laptop. So, a mature and easy docking solution was a must. How and Where PurchasedMy initial budget was around $1000. I started with Sony but didn't really like their pricing and lack of core duo in a 14-inch laptop. My friend had a Fujitsu notebook and I was impressed with its quality. But I couldn't configure a Fujitsu notebook for less than $2000 with a core duo processor. I spent some time looking at an HP dv2000t, but their docking solution is a joke. Plus, the build quality wasn't enough for me. Next was the Dell latitude D620. The build quality looked good. I'm not sure why I looked at Dell again given my first experience, but either way I decided against the D620 at the last moment because of lack of S-video and previous Dell nightmares. I then found NotebookReview.com and took my friend's suggestion to take a look at ThinkPads. I didn't know Lenovo had widescreen consumer oriented notebooks. After researching for 2-days I was hooked. I needed a ThinkPad at any cost. I raised my budget to $1,400 but still couldn't configure one with Bluetooth and a DVD writer for under $1,600 with tax. Then I figured out that IBM has EPP pricing which really makes sense. Dell has 12% EPP, but after researching I found Dell EPP was more expensive than non-EPP if you use certain Dell coupons. HP just gives you 10% for EPP. After raising my budget to $1,800, I found an IBM consultant at work and got access to EPP pricing. I had to ship the notebook to Delaware to save $110 tax.The total cost was, $1,599 ( laptop ) + $265 ( Advanced Dock) + $92 ( 3 year warranty) - $200 ( Discount) = $1,756. The web price will be around $2,600 with tax. I will talk about the additional $200 discount in the support section!ThinkPad Z61t specs as reviewed: 2.0 GHz Intel T2500 Core Duo 14.1" WXGA+, 1440X900 LCD display 100GB hard drive (5400rpms) CD-RW/ 8X DVD-RW Multi-burner 1GB SDRAM (1 DIMM) Bluetooth Modem Built-in Camera and microphone Sudden motion sensor Fingerprint Reader 802.11 a/b/g wireless built-in Verizon EVDO built-in 3-in-one card reader 3-year international depot warranty 4.3 lbs Plus Z61 advanced Dock Model# 94402CU Build & DesignThe Z61t is built solidly but not rock solid like T series. It was a little thicker than I imagined. The titanium cover is a plus and looks decent unlike those shiny HP laptops. As soon as you open the screen, you will notice that this laptop feels solid. The inside is made from rugged and elegant high quality plastic. Two metal hinges of same size support the display. There is no wobbling when opening and closing the lid. You will need both the hands to open the screen. Also, if you try to open it with just one hand, you don't see the screen bend like other laptops. The look and feel of the area around the screen might even make you think it's made of metal not plastic. The only thing that looks plastic is the shiny EVDO antenna cover which is attached to the screen. To get an idea of the relative thickness of the Z61t, I placed 2 miniDV tapes next to the laptop. The laptop is around 1 inch thick.

It seems that having a laptop stamped with an Italian sports car brand is the in-thing these days. Acer has been hanging around the pit-lane with Ferrari, and Asus has teamed up with Lamborghini to create the VX1. It comes in a choice of black or yellow trim - Lamborghini's corporate colors - although there's more to the VX1 than a cool paint job...Acer's other team loyalty is AMD, so it's perhaps no surprise Asus has gone with Intel. The VX1 is a Centrino laptop. My review model came with a Core Duo T2500 processor clocked at 2GHz, although models with a Core 2 Duo processor will be available soon, Asus tells me. The chipset is the Intel 945PM, so there's no integrated graphics. Asus has gone for the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 VX with 512MB of Turbo Cache, which is a souped up version of the GeForce Go 7400 but still far from a suitable solution for gaming on the move. This is rather disappointing considering the Lamborghini badge, and one would think that Asus would've fitted a more powerful graphics chip into the VX1.The review model also came with 2GB of DDR 2 memory - which is more in line with what you would expect from a top of the range laptop - and a 160GB IDE hard drive. It's disappointing (again) that Asus hasn't gone for SATA here - the machine's chipset supports it - as this is quickly becoming the norm on new notebooks. The optical drive is a super-multi DVD writer which handles all the common formats and DVD-RAM. It's not the fastest drive out there and it's not, alas, a slot-load unit. The optical drive is mounted on the left-hand side of the chassis alongside an ExpressCard 54 bay, a four-pin FireWire connector, an infra-red receiver and a standard VGA connector. There's no DVI or HDMI connector, which again is a shame on a machine so clearly targeting the performance end of the notebook market. The right-hand side is home to four USB 2.0 ports spread out along the length of the laptop; a multi-format memory card reader that accepts SD, MMC and various Memory Stick formats; a headphone and microphone socket, with optical S/PDIF output inside the latter; and finally a 56Kbps modem and a Gigabit Ethernet connector.
The VX1 ships with a carbon fibre-look laptop bag as well as a Lamborghini branded zip-up carrying pouch. This is a nice bonus, but again doesn't make up for the shortcomings.

Smallest Laptop - Sony VAIO UX
NEW: Thinnest Laptop 2008 - Only 0.76 inch thick!!!
Check out the top 3 mini laptops (10 inch laptops) I recommend to my friends
GOOD NEWS: You can save $100 instantly on the world smallest laptop SONY VAIO® UX Series from the Sony's official web site today!
My previous laptop review was written mainly for the "serious" computer users. For those of you who dig the "coolest", "fanciest" gizmos outa there, here is a new toy:
This is got to be the smallest laptop available today - Sony VAIO UX. With a dimension of 5.91”×3.74”×1.50”, Sony VAIO UX is equipped with a 1.2 GHz Intel Mobile CPU, 512 MB DDR2 PC2-3200 400 MHz RAM and 32 GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive at 4200 RPM. Of course it comes with all of the network gadgets like blue tooth, wireless modem, etc. Sony VAIO UX combines the best features from mobile phones, PDA, and Laptop computers. For example, it has two built-in cameras! one on the back can be used as still photo camera and the one in the front can be used as a web camera. This laptop also has a stereo speaker built in! The sliding keyboard makes it slick and small. Oh, did I mention, it is a tablet PC? And it comes with USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 / Firewire, VGA and AV output! It has a slide-out keyboard! For normal typing, it's more than enough!
The battery is weight 1.2 lb which can last 3-5 hours and the Intel graphic media accelerator 950 supports maximum resolution of 1024 x 600. Yes, it is a PC which means it's attached with MS Windows XP Pro.

2.Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 (FPCM21122) has a nice look, the cool colored titanium skin make it attractive to young people and female laptop consumers. This laptop weight only 2.55 lb! Here is the default configuration with the mini laptop: Intel ULV Core Solo U1400 CPU (1.2GHz,Intel 945GMS chip set),1024MB DDR2 RAM,80GB hard drive,build-in DVD/CDRW,10.6 inch LCD. What's special about this laptop is it comes with 2 batteries by default and 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 fire wire port, a multi-card reader, and a wireless network card. Pretty much everything you will need when you are on the road. The advantage of this laptop is it's light weight and more memory)

Mini Laptops

With a recent shoulder injury, the 20 lb Dell XPS (with battery and power supply) appears to be heavier than normal. It's interesting that the laptop sizes are going to the two extremes, the powerful ones are evolving from 13 inch to 14 inch to 17 inch to 20.1 inch (Dell XPS M2010)! On the other hand, the manufacturers are also making the laptops to the mini end: 12 inch to 11 inch to 10 inch to 6 inch (the world smallest laptop – Sony VAIO UX)!
Among all of the mini laptops, the 10 inch laptops seem to be the most “popular” and “mature” laptop products. Sony and Fujitsu were the first two companies that started the mini laptop series. But other laptop producers like Acer, Lenovo (IBM) and Apple immediately jump onto the mini laptop wagon.
This obviously is driven by the consumers. There are people like me looking for more powerful desktop replacement laptops, but there are people like my co-workers (whom owns the first generation of mini laptops – SONY VGN-UX) refuses to carry around heavy laptops. It seems more people I know are looking for the smaller solution at the moment, here I find a few models for their selections.
1. The newer version of my co-worker's Sony mini laptop is Sony VAIO VGN-T350P/L. The entire laptop weight only 3.04 lb, it uses Intel M 1.2GHz, 2MB cache memory, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 60 GB 4200 RPM hard drive, 10.6 WXGA LCD display, 10/100M wireless network card and an INTERNAL DVD Recorder! The VGN-T350P/L battery supports up to 9 hours of operation! Wow, my XPS battery only supports up to 2.5 hours and a risk of explosion! :) The advantage of this mini laptop is it's from a reliable series, my co-worker whom own the fist generation of Sony mini laptop has been using it for 3 years and barely had any problems.

A laptop computer, also known as a notebook computer, is a small personal computer designed for mobile use. A laptop integrates all of the typical components of a desktop computer, including a display, a keyboard, a pointing device (a touchpad, also known as a trackpad, or a pointing stick) and a battery into a single portable unit. The rechargeable battery is charged from an AC/DC adapter and has enough capacity to power the laptop for several hours.
A laptop is usually shaped like a large notebook with thickness of 0.7-1.5 inches (1.7-4cm) and dimensions ranging from 10x8 inches (27x22cm, 13" display) to 15x11 inches (39x28cm, 17" display) and up. Modern laptops weigh 3 to 12 pounds (1.4 to 5.4 kg), and some older laptops were even heavier. Most laptops are designed in the flip form factor to protect the screen and the keyboard when closed.
Originally considered "a small niche market"[1] and perceived as suitable for "specialized field applications" such as "the military, the Internal Revenue Service, accountants and sales representatives"[1][2], battery-powered portables had just 2% worldwide market share in 1986[3]. But today, there are already more laptops than desktops in the enterprise[4] and, according to a forecast by Intel, more laptops than desktops will be sold in the general PC market as soon as 2009[5].
