Clevo M98xNU laptop to be unveiled at CeBit 09

In this day and age one would expect with a laptop with an 18.4 inch supported Full HD - 1920×1080 pixels panel such as the Clevo M98xNU, the Clevo engineers would have worked out a way of putting the components into a slimmed casing, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with the beast.
That being said, the Clevo M98xNU does require a bit of breathing space with its quad core Intel processor and twin NVIDIA 9800M GTX GPUs and DDR3-1333 RAM.
The word on the net is the Clevo M98xNU gaming laptop is to be officially unveiled at CeBIT in March 09 in Germany.

MacBook freezing issue goes unsolved by firmware update

Yesterday I posted on the update for the Apple MacBook, Apple MacBook Pro and Apple MacBook Air, and there were hopes that the new firmware update would sort out the issues Macer’s were experiencing with the memory max freeze problem.Well apparently, according to jkOnTheRun, at first the new firmware update did sort out the freeze issue but is extremely short lived as the freeze problem returned and again backing to 2GB or 3GB is the only remedy to get the laptop back in action.Obviously Apple didn’t announce that the firmware update would actually sort out the issue, but surely Apple knowing the problem exists, they would have tackled the problem that has been daunting so many Macer’s; guess not this time round though.

Ericsson and Intel enable GPS tracking of stolen laptops

The theft of laptops is a large problem in the world today and while a password along with an encrypted drive on a laptop can protect data, what is really needed is a way of tracking your laptop when stolen and ultimately reacquiring it and sending the thief to prison.Lenovo already has its Lockdown PC Now protection system which allows the disabling of a stolen laptop via SMS, but it still doesn’t locate the laptop.Ericsson in conjunction with Intel has announced their intent to make Ericsson’s HSPA-capable Mobile Broadband Modules compatible with Intel’s Anti-Theft Technology, a move that adds GPS to track a stolen laptop’s location, and is expected to begin shipping in the 1st half of 09.

Hewlett Packard drop price of Mini 1000 laptop by $40

Hewlett Packard has reduced the price on their sleek and sexy looking Mini 1000 laptop bringing the asking price down by $40.00 to just $359.99; that’s for a basic configuration of course and as expected any extras will boost the final price.

The price is for a HP Mini 1000 with a 10 inch panel, Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU, Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, 1GB of RAM combined with an 8GB SSD and a three-cell battery.

Not too sure if we will be seeing reductions on further HP laptops including the HP Vivienne TAM version, but this just may mark the beginnings of a pricing battle in the run up to Christmas that could leave the customer well off for a change

Novatech X50MV Pro Gaming laptop

If you are looking for a gaming laptop, Novatech may not be the name that springs to mind, but maybe you should be taking a look at the Novatech X50MV Pro Gaming Notebook which includes a 2.5 inch colour display on its lid.
The Novatech X50MV Pro pushes out some impressive specs under the hood too, such as a quad core Q9550 processor, dual 8800M GTX SLI graphics and three 200GB 7,200rpm hard drives in RAID 5, but the GeForce 9600M GT graphics leaves a little to be desired.

The LCD seems nice though and there is a built-in TV tuner, and overall performance is pretty good, and critics can’t help but recommend the Novatech X50MV Pro over quite a few others that are close to the same price point.

Netbooks only fine for an hour says Intel VP

Intel has never denied that the Atom chipset was primarily developed for low powered netbooks and mobile devices for emerging markets, so it doesn’t really surprise when the vice president of Intel, Stu Pann says Intel doesn’t see netbooks as a potential cannibalisation of sales of it processor.According to Pann, he believes a netbook incorporating a ten inch screen is “fine for an hour. It’s not something you’re going to use day in and day out.”That may be true but somewhat harsh that previously heard from Intel and more in line with AMD’s decision to completely ignore netbooks in favour of more capable machines of a larger size. But are people actually going to turn away from netbooks simply because Intel and AMD don’t like them?

Samsung R610 laptop: not the greatest out there

In America the Samsung R610 is designed to be amongst the thinnest and lightest 16 inch laptops available and reasonably priced among the less expensive laptops out there. The Samsung R610 did will in succeeding in its core missions but unfortunately hasn’t faired too well when it came down to the biz.Performance wise critics say the Samsung R610 is acceptable overall but leaves a lot to be desired in the HDD test results and graphics scores, and that the 6-cell battery under performs giving just 2.5 hours before recharge. However the battery life could be extended if you are willing to pay a little extra for a 9-cell battery pack, but as it is reviewers simply don’t have the heart to recommend the Samsung R610 over something like an Acer 6930G

Video: Apples Green MacBook TV advert

Well we’ve seen Apple’s new MacBooks, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air in shining images splashed all over the net on their arrival, and well it was only a matter of time before Apple hit the airwaves of TV with a promotional campaign. And thus Apple has producted and debuted a new Apple Mac TV advert which has begun showing on US network television. In said advert, Apple explains that their new range of MacBooks advanced alimunium and glass casings are utterly recyclable and that they are enginerred to be so efficient that it only uses a quarter of the power used in a single light bulb.Anyway, I’ll let you watch the video below and you can judge for yourselves.

HP Mini 1000: how to get 3G working

When the HP Mini1000 came out last month there was whispers of a fell 3G spec version following in December, well it’s not quite December and an owner has managed to get online with his new HP mini 1000.Dplky user over at Pocketables forum has put in some time with AT&T and HP customer support so he can describe the how-to which the full instructions can be found at the source.Basically you will need to download a WWAN drive from HP, extract and install it then slot your SIM into the battery compartment, but with a 3-cell battery it will struggle to keep broadcasting, and is unlikely to work with older HP mini 1000s.

Video: Apple slates Vista and advertising costs

We all know that when it comes to advertising a product it’s going to run expensive, and several people, including Apple had something to say about Microsoft forking over $300 million to shout out the goodness of Vista in their advertising campaign. But the reality is Apple spends far more on getting the big wide world to know about their products and services, however, unlike Microsoft, Apple campaigns actually work.According to figures, Apple’s advertising budget for the fiscal year ending 2008 was a staggering $486 million, the year before it was $467 million, and before that in 06 it was $338 million, so it looks like advertising is becoming more expensive. So maybe Apple shouldn’t be saying anything against just how much Microsoft pays when they are no more frugal.

256GB SSD mass produced by Samsung on their way

The problem with SSDs is that they are simply too expensive with low capacities, for instance a current 128GB SSD costs about $400.00 which is way more expensive that the normal mechanical dive and holds less data. However, Samsung are preparing to breach the gap with their new 256GB SSD that they have just placed in mass production. Its storage is close-ish to being on par with most laptop hard drives, and as a mass production product Samsung should be able to keep the pricing down.An Axiom 256GB SSD goes for as much as $7,500 and no word on Samsung’s prices yet, but when you consider Samsung’s 128GB SSDs go for between $550 and $800 their 256GB SSD could well come in between $1,000 and $1,400, which still isn’t cheap, but is way below the Axiom

Their upcoming Moorestown platform is scheduled to be launched in 2009. Moorestown will let the devi9ces to run for full 24 hours before going for a recharge. THE LATEST UPCOMING LAPTOP THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

The best thing about technology is that it improves and develops continuously. This probably is also the most challenging bit about technology that a buyer finds difficult to deal with. The laptop that is right for you will depend solely on your need. The most important question for you to answer is: why do I need a laptop? The latest laptops are full of features enhancing connectivity, usability, communication and also your comfort. They are lighter, faster and sport trendy looks. Following are some of the outstanding features of the latest upcoming laptops. You will also understand which feature provides you what kind of service and whether you need that or not.RAM: RAM or random access memory determines the amount of bits a programme can use while it runs on your laptop. The more programmes that you need to work on, the higher should be the RAM of your laptop. If you are a multimedia developer, a gamer or an architect, you would need a laptop with higher RAM so that you can run a number of programmes simultaneously without affecting the speed adversely. The latest upcoming laptops have installed RAM from 1GB to 4GB (Sony VAIO SZ). You can also upgrade RAM. So it is best that you choose a laptop where extra memory can be added.Hard Drive: Hard Disc Drive (HDD) or hard drive as it is most commonly known as stores digitally encoded data in your laptop. Simply speaking it is the HDD that stores the newly created data and the old data even after the power supply is turned off. So if you want to play games and store your progress, keep latest flicks and music in your laptop, share it with someone else, keep a backup of your work, you will need a laptop with bigger HDD.These days laptops come with even 200GB hard disk. That’s a huge storage area. Remember though, a bigger hard drive also means heavier weight.Processor: Processor is simply put the brain of your laptop. It processes all the instruction that you enter on your laptop, starting from typing a word document to playing a game. Most manufacturers use either Intel processors or AMD processors. Intel Processors has a slower internal clock rate than AMD Processors. If you want high end graphics quality then AMD processor is your pick. But remember to check if your laptop has the latest version of the processor. The latest set of processors is Intel Core 2 Duo from Intel and AMD Opteron and Athlon Dual Core from AMD.Connectivity: Connectivity is the need of the hour. You want to keep your laptop as mobile as possible. Look for a Bluetooth and wireless enabled laptop if you want to stay connected wherever you go. Again the latest upcoming laptops come with a bouquet of wireless connectivity options. Also to consider is the number of USB ports in your laptop so that you can use the telephone, broadband or Ethernet connections as well as connect your laptop with other compatible devices like printer, camera, mobile phone etc.Once you decide on the main features, you can also accessorise your laptop according to your need.

Redfly C7 and C8n ships Early December from $229

The Celio Redfly C7 is a knocked down version of the original REDFLY, a folio style Windows Mobile that was originally an 8.3 inch display and is now chopped down to a 7 inch display with losing 3 hours of its battery life, so the Redfly C7 swaps endurance and screen size for a lower weight of a couple of ounces.Equally you could opt for the Celio Redfly C8N which sports an 8.3 inch display and “REDFLY Media Port” which connects to an Apple iPhone, iPos, Zune, digicam or virtually anything else that incorporates a TV-out.One catch though is you will require a $20.00 “REDFLY Media Cable” on top of the cost of the C8N package. Both the Celio Redfly C7 and Celio Redfly C8N should hit the first week of December with the Redfly C7 costing $229.00 and the Redfly C8N costing $299.00.

The Future of Laptops: Apple, Dell and Samsung etc, what next?

There have been several new releases of laptops over the past few months from big name such as Apple, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Asus, HP, Lenovo and Acer amongst others. I myself use a Dell Dimension Desktop, and as a writer I know several people on the internet in varying countries across the globe and occasionally ask what machine they prefer. The difference is wide ranging mostly when speaking to those in America the mention of the Apple Mac for instance send them into a tirade of moans, but this is when experiencing the older MacBooks, as yet I haven’t found any writer who uses one of the new MacBooks or MacBook Pros. Other say they wouldn’t trade their Toshiba for anything else, I also know a couple who are experiencing drastic problems with their HP machines which seem to crash every 30 minutes. It’s difficult to say which laptop manufacturer comes out on top as everyone has his or hers preference in manufacturer. One thing is for sure though, laptop manufacturers have to keep ahead of the game and product better and faster machines with easier and more powerful applications to suit the computing world of today. So what do our readers think the laptop market will be like in say 10 years time? Who do you think will dominate in the laptop world? What do you think we can expect to see with new laptops in the future?James.

Dell vs HP: What laptop makers do you prefer?

Two big names associated with the world of computing are Dell and HP, both leaders in the laptop and desktop provider arena, but which company would win your vote in a battle between these two giants?Dell, supplier of the likes of the Dimension, Inspiron, XPS, Studio series laptops, and gives the ability for the potential customer to “build” their own laptop to their required specifications, as long as it’s a Dell component that is. The only thing I would say Dell has really against it is that you can’t simply walk into a retail store on purchase a Dell machine, well not here in the UK anyway.HP, supplier of HP Pavilion range of laptops, the Compaq Presario laptops, the TouchSmart, Media Centre Elite, and the HDX, again a wide range supplier of today’s laptops to the public. With HP you can go into a retail store and purchase, but can you customise to suit your needs like you can with Dell?I’d like to see who could come out on top between these two or even if you prefer another supplier. So I’d like to ask out readers what laptop maker do you prefer?James.

Rugged new P470 laptop from Getac

Rugged laptop manufacturer has just announced a new model, the P470 -- a 'secure and rugged' laptop designed to keep valuable data secure on the move.
Despite a lightweight magnesiumn alloy case, the P470 still weighs a whopping 3kg , but at least it has a built-in carrying handle. The hard disk and screen are shock-mounted, and all the ports have caps to protect against dust and water

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t do with a brand new laptop, it’s take it down to the beach, roll it around in the sand and drop it into a rocky pool. While such a day trip would spell the end for most laptops, some, like the Getac V100 Tablet, are made of sturdier stuff

Getac P470 rugged laptop

Most manufacturers would no doubt describe their laptops as “built to last”, but there aren’t that many who go the extra mile to make their models robust enough to withstand more than just the odd knock they’ll get on the daily commute. Getac is one manufacturer that does, however, and its new P470 rugged laptop is built to shrug off all manner of harsh treatment.

It's not much use having an indestructible laptop capabale of resisting soaring temperatures if you can't see the screen for the blazing sun. Good job, then, that Getac has fitted out its tank-like V100 tablet with an optional new Sunlight-Readable LCD display.
The screen boasts a brightness of 1200cd/msq – which Getac claims is the highest in the industry. And before you ask, the LED backlit display doesn't place any more strain in the battery.
In addition to its powers of brightness the new screen uses an, "active anti-reflective process," to block any reflected light, thus boosting visibility even further. Now, if only we had any bright sunlight to test it with.

Asus has been basking smugly in the glare of the positive mass media attention it’s getting for the great Eee laptop but, dammit, Dell has had enough. In fact, it wants some of that mini-laptop spotlight itself and thinks its Mini-Inspiron will do the trick.
Dell posted these photos on its blog after Michael Dell was spotted by Gizmodo US carrying one around and the rumour-mill cranked up.

Sony may have been a step slow in catching up to Apple in the portable MP3 player market, but it's been out in front when it comes to turning the laptop from a boring gray slab of plastic into a chic travel accessory. It's been offering its VAIO laptops with different color cases for a while now, with the just-announced VAIO CR line being the latest set of rainbow-hue portables. At 5.5 pounds, the new notebook isn't as ultraportable as some of Sony's offerings, but it's definitely lighter than a typical laptop. Available in five different color choices—blue, pink, red, white, and black—the VGN-CR120E's pricing starts at $1,369.99. Classified as an Intel Centrino Duo (or "Santa Rosa") laptop, the VGN-CR120E features a new 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo T7100 processor, Intel's new X3100 integrated graphics, and 802.11n wireless networking support. The base config has 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a double-layer DVD burner, and Windows Vista Home Premium. To keep the size down, Sony has given the system a smallish 14.1-inch LCD. Fashionistas will appreciate the optional color-coordinated laptop case and external mouse. Sony says the VAIO CR series will be available at the end of June.

Just don’t get too excited, because this is old news [circa 2004]. And something that is currently being rehashed as new on Digg, Slashdot, and Linux sites…
I’m sure you have seen it too: the news along the lines of “[insert random OEM here] releasing incredible Linux offers”, quickly followed by naive comments proclaiming the end of Microsoft.
The fact is, OEMs and companies like Wal-Mart have been attempting to sell Linux based PCs and Laptops/Notebooks for years. Take a look:
Sept. 14, 1999 Is the IBM Thinkpad now Linux-friendly?
Spring 2000 Dell Delivers Linux! [Archive.org]
June 17, 2002 Wal-Mart trims prices of Linux-based PCs
May 12, 2003 HP “people’s notebook” runs Linux
July 22, 2004 Toshiba Windows media laptop plays with embedded Linux
Unfortunately, most of these attempts have resulted in complete failure or extremely small volume [Wal-Mart couldn't even sell 1000 of those Laptops]. And every few years, the waters are tested again, with the same exact outcome.
Lets face the truth: Linux does not work for the average consumer, it never has, as “choice” is not something that consumers are looking for. Familiarity, function, and eye candy are the determining factors here.
As “Linux” is not synonymous with “Wal-Mart”; it neither is with “Desktop.”

I guess I would say I don't "mod" systems so much as completely rebuild them. This is a perfect example as everything in the Xbox 360 has been taken apart and reassembled, with LCD screen, in laptop form inside a custom case. Here are the specs:1) Uses a 17" wide (diagonal) 1280x720 progressive-scan LCD VGA monitor (for HD-level resolutions) Thus you can actually read the text in Dead Rising.2) Water-cooled with custom-built radiator. Allows for a slimmer main body versus the mammoth heat sinks in a stock 360.3) Built-in keyboard and Wi-Fi.4) USB hub allows original number of 3 USB ports for user.5) All-aluminum case, except for plastic keyboard / ring of light / screen control area.6) Uses single customized "expanded" power supply brick for both screen and Xbox 360.7) Breakout ports on back allow hookup to component TV, VGA monitor, sound system (analog or TOSlink) and even crummy composite video.8) Size: 16.75" x 10.75" x 2.8" Weight: 14 pounds (with water loaded)
